High Pressure Processing (HPP) is a unique food preservation method that utilizes cold water and high pressure (up to 87,000 psi) to keep pet food products free of pathogens without compromising flavor. Sometimes called “cold pasteurization,” HPP does not use heat to combat the bacteria, which can harm the nutritional properties of the product. High pressure processing is a natural way to safely preserve pet food.
Because HPP eliminates the risk of bacteria in dog food, cat food, and other pet products, it makesĀ them safe for both pets and humans to handle. HPP extends product shelf-life allowing for an increased distribution range and less product waste. In addition to longer shelf life, HPP enables cleaner labels, less preservatives, and maintains the health and nutritional aspects of fresh kibble.
Some data shows that minimally processed or raw diets reduce the chances of allergies or digestive issues in pets. Since HPP can eliminate the need for artificial preservatives and additional processing, it supports this data and confirms the use of HPP for fresh dog and cat food products to enhance pet health.
Fresh pet food products that work well with HPP include raw, steamed, and pre-cooked formulations, as well as intermediate ingredient items prior to being freeze-dried, or undergoing further processing. Pet food products must contain a certain level of water in order to successfully undergo HPP.
